Qualities Of Great Leader – Boldness And Servanthood

Qualities Of Great Leader

6. Boldness

"Boldness" is another way of saying "courage and confidence." It's a willingness to take prudent, calculated risks in order to achieve big goals and dreams. You might also call it a "pioneering spirit," or a "spirit of adventure." It is the courage to blaze new trails, to take a lonely stand in the face of criticism or ridicule, or to risk one's self and one's possessions in order to do what is morally and ethically right.

We already devoted an entire blog post to boldness, so I won't dwell on it here – except to say that there is no success without boldness. Only those who are willing to act courageously will see their dreams come true. Boldness is an essential character trait of those who achieve success by focusing on leadership and influence.

What Qualities Make A Good Leader

5. Competence

To be a person of leadership and influence, you must inspire confidence in your team or organization. Your followers must trust you to be a competitive and competent leader. They must believe you have the skills, the savvy, the experience, and the fighting spirit to lead them into the winner's circle.

In the late 1990s, Ken Carter, the proprietor of a sporting goods store, accepted a part-time coaching position at nearby Richmond High School. Richmond is a poor, crime-ridden city across the bay from San Francisco. Coach Carter had been a star basketball player with the Richmond High Oilers in the 1970s, and he wanted to give something back to his old school.

Qualities Of A Effective Leader – Character Of Leader

Qualities Of A Effective Leader

4. Character

I once asked Coach Wooden the secret to success in sports and in life. Without hesitating, he replied, "The secret, in a word, is character. Ability can get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there." He added that leaders must be people of unimpeachable character themselves, and they must continually instill character in the people they lead. "I required my players and students to treat everybody with respect," he added, "whether it be the custodian or the president of the university. I told them I expected them to always be considerate of others, and I never permitted profanity."

On one occasion, as coach of the UCLA Bruins, John Wooden was in the process of recruiting one of the best high school players in the nation. When that player and his mother came on campus for a visit, Coach Wooden changed his mind and scratched this player off his list. Why? Because Coach saw this young man treat his mother with disrespect. He knew that any player who would behave disrespectfully to his mother would be a bad character risk on the team. In fact, a player with a disrespectful attitude might infect the entire team and ruin the team chemistry.

Qualities Of A Good Leaders

2. Communication Skills

It's not enough to have a vision. You must persuade and motivate the people on your team to help you build your dream. And that means you must communicate. You're not just a leader – you're a marketer of dreams! It's your job to persuade your followers buy into your dream and adopt it as their own dream. You have to convince them that it is not just "my vision" but "our vision."

Great leaders radiate enthusiasm, encouragement, and an irrepressible confidence. Optimism is contagious. The best leaders are great storytellers. Stories are powerful channels of emotion, and when you link a strong vision to strong emotions, you have a winning combination. People forget principles and charts and bullet points, but great stories stick in the mind forever.

How Can Be A Good Leader – Seven Sides Of Leadership

How Can Be A Good Leader

Are leaders born or made? In other words, is leadership a natural gift, or is leadership a set of skills that can be learned? Answer: both! Almost everyone has some capacity for leadership in some arena of life or another. And a few of us are naturally gifted with leadership ability in abundance. But we can all improve the leadership traits we already possess while learning new leadership skills as we go along.

I have made a lifelong study of leadership. I have gone to the best leadership minds in the world for their insights. In the process, I have determined that leadership is a seven-dimensional experience, a seven-sided whole. There is nothing vague or mystical about this concept. It's a clear and practical concept that you can implement immediately. All seven of these dimensions of leadership are learnable skills:
