Leadership Styles And Qualities – Stretch Goals To Stretch Your Imagination

Leadership Styles And Qualities

One of the most powerful techniques that marketing and advertisement people use for motivation and to excite people about their products and services, are two words: possibility and hope. Imagine the possibility of earning $20,000. Imagine the possibility of realizing the craziest dream that you've ever had. Hope is what drives people forward – hope of finding the perfect partner, hope of winning the lottery and hope of living your dream.

Similarly, stretch goals are goals that at the time you set them, may seem impossible to reach by means of current abilities and skills. But the thought of reaching them gives you an adrenalin rush and a sense of emotional drive. Most of us tend to set incremental or puny goals. Incremental goals are goals that are slightly higher or bigger that what you currently have. For example, we will use your salary range as a good indication. You set yourself the target of achieving an additional 10% on your salary. ls that enough to excite you? Will that give you the emotional drive to jump into action? Hardly.

Project Management And Leadership – SMART Goals

Project Management And Leadership

When we set goals and targets, we need to make sure that all the goals and targets are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Tangible; in other words, SMART goals.

Specific Goals

Specific goals are goals which are clear, concise and have a greater chance of getting accomplished compared to general goals. A general goal would be: "I would like to earn more money". A specific goal would be: "I want to increase my level of income to $8,000 a month". To set specific goals, you have to answer what I call the 5-wives and 1-husband questions:

  • Who?

Who must achieve this goal? Who is involved in the process of achieving this goal? Is this an individual goal or a team goal? How many people need to work together to achieve it?

Example Of Leadership Qualities – Presidential Qualities

Example Of Leadership Qualities

During the time of President Abraham Lincoln who fought so hard for equality among all citizens in the United States, no one would have envisioned that over a hundred years later, an African-American would be in the running to be the president of the United States.

This is what evolution in the human mentality has brought us. Barack Obama, an African-American from a modest home, stands as the first African-American president of the United States.

Obama grew up in much less privileged circumstances abandoned by his Kenyan father at the age of two, his mother divorced twice, while he grew up with the help of his grandparents who had moved to Hawaii. His humble origins are a classic example of the American dream of achieving success from poor beginnings.

Research On Leadership Style – Review Your Plans Periodically And Receive Feedback

Research On Leadership Style

Once you have initiated your first goal and put it into action mode, you need to keep track of progress: how well you are doing and whether you are on course of achieving the goal you have set based on the step-by-step processes that you have determined earlier. For instance if your goal is to get the whole house painted and cleaned in one week, you may want to review your goal and plans on a daily basis to ensure that you remain on top of things and don't slack off. Getting the whole house painted may involve painting the garage, painting all the rooms, painting the living room and getting it decorated and so on.

Therefore, in order to know that you are on track, follow the step-by-step plan you have listed in your 7-day goal and periodically review it. If you realize you are getting side tracked by certain unexpected turns of events, which will happen however full proof you think your plans are, allow yourself some time offso that you are able to review, realign and readjust the goals and targets that you have initially set.

Examples Of Leadership Qualities – Starting An Airline

Examples Of Leadership Qualities

When Tony Fernandes wanted to start a budget airline seven years ago, he couldn't get a license or anybody to buy his idea. You see, the idea of a discount carrier couldn't sell since everybody had the mindset that flying is only for people who can afford it. He then sold his idea to the Prime Minister at the time. He envisioned how a discount carrier would revolutionize Asian air travel, at a time when airlines worldwide were still struggling from the impact of September 11 terrorist attacks.

He took a substantial risk by buying the airline for a token of 26 cents, as well as inheriting its debt of roughly $11 million. He only saw one outcome. He could not afford to fail. Fernandes learned to think like an entrepreneur from his mentor, Sir Richard Branson. He imitated and emulated what Branson was doing and followed his successful business model. Fernandes had a remarkable influence on the shaping of government and airline mentality in Southeast Asia and beyond. Previously, neighboring countries had never had any kind of open-skies agreement. He knew exactly what he wanted and had a clear idea and vision of how to achieve it.
