What Are The Quality Of A Good Leader
Let me review a few key insights of extreme focus. If you will live by these principles day by day and week by week, if you will turn these principles into habits, and those habits into a way of life, you will reach your dreams. In fact, if you follow these principles, I don't see how anything could ever stop you.
These are the same principles by which I lived my life as I was pursuing the dream of an NBA championship in Philadelphia and the dream of an NBA expansion team in Orlando. Every success habit I've recommended to you in these pages has served me well in my own life. These principles have been proven again and again in the lives of hundreds of successful people I've known. So let's look at these success principles once again. Let's put these principles together and see how they make it possible for us to live a lifestyle of extreme focus.
Key No. 1: Extreme Focus Is the Key to Achieving Your Dreams
Get started – just do it! Then stay focused until you finish. Learn to say no to distractions and time-wasters, so you can focus on what is most important in life.
The ability to focus with intensity is a key to success in every field, from athletics, to business, to the arts, to the sciences, and to mathematics. Extreme focus is not merely the ability to think the right thoughts, but also the ability to screen out the wrong thoughts – the distractions, doubts, and fears that interfere with our best performance. To those who are truly focused, time disappears. Distractions fade away. People of extreme focus see nothing but the goal – and that is why they succeed.
Key No. 2: Focus on Your Passion in Life
Passion is an intense and compelling emotional drive. It is the energy that powers us as we reach for our dreams. Nothing great was ever accomplished without passion. Focus on the one thing in life that you are truly passionate about – then pursue it with all your might. Be a doer, not a dabbler. Remember the phrase, "This one thing I do!" Focus on your dreams, your goals, your passion – not on pleasing other people.
Key No. 3: Focus on Tomorrow
Goals are dreams with deadlines – so set deadlines for your goals and keep faith with your dreams. Don't put your dreams on hold – take time today to brainstorm and visualize a brighter tomorrow. Write down your short-range, medium-range, and long-range goals. Post your goals where you can see them and be inspired by them every day. Review and recalibrate your goals on a regular basis. Focus on tomorrow by preparing today.
Key No. 4: Focus on Today
This day belongs to you. Seize it. Own it. Use it well. Ask yourself, "What am I trading for this twenty four-hour period called 'today'?" Practice effective time-management techniques. Cut big tasks down to small steps. Group related actions together for maximum efficiency. Prioritize your goals. Meet your deadlines. Use the power of the Grab 15 Principle to magically add more time to your life.
Get "in the zone." Prepare yourself mentally so that you can overcome self-doubt, self-limiting assumptions, laziness, fear, and lack of focus. Meditate on positive beliefs. Spend time around positive thinkers, and feed your mind on positive thoughts. Relax. Stay in the moment – and stay "in the zone."
Key No. 5: Focus on Self-Discipline
Good habits and hard work are the stuff dreams are made of. Self-discipline isn't a shoe you put on and take off. It's a lifestyle. Commit yourself to lifelong, year-round self-discipline. Be disciplined in the small things, and the big things will take care of themselves. Strive for quality; "good enough" is never good enough. Maintain a disciplined work ethic. Everyone dreams – but those who are disciplined make their dreams come true.
Key No. 6: Focus on Things You Can Control – and Let Go of Everything Else
You can't choose your level of talent, but you can control your effort. You can't control the weather, but you can control your attitude. Don't be a control freak. Instead of obsessing over the things you can't control, meditate on the Serenity Prayer.
Do what you can to guard your health – but accept the fact that we all get sick from time to time. You can't control the questions, but you can control the answers. You can't control the advance of time, but you can control your schedule. You can't control the marketplace or the regulatory environment, but you can control the performance of your organization. You can't control your feelings, but you can manage how you respond to your feelings. If you control what you can control and let go of the rest, you are well on your way to achieving your dreams.
Key No.7: Focus on Your Courage and Confidence
Fortune favors the bold, so take calculated risks. Focus on your courage, not your fears. Do the thing you fear, and the death of fear is certain. Don't fear ridicule or criticism or what other people may think; just do what you know is right. Keep advancing toward your dreams, no matter what others say. Don't be a spectator – live the adventure!
Give yourself permission to fail. Be prepared; preparation builds confidence! Be boldly, courageously decisive – a bad decision is better than no decision at all. When you crash, "get right back in the cockpit of the bird that bit ya." Don't try to be someone you're not – be boldly who you are. Be courageous in doing good works.
Key No. 8: Focus on Commitment
When you commit yourself to a goal, you empower yourself to prevail over obstacles and opposition. Be mentally tough! Commit yourself to a fighting spirit – never give up the fight! Commit yourself to continuous growth and learning. Commit yourself to good character. Allow others to hold you accountable for keeping your commitments. Never give up, never give in – because the next few seconds, the next ounce of energy you expend, may make the difference in achieving your dreams.
Key No. 9: Focus on Leadership and Influence
If you dream of success on a grand scale, then think teamwork. The bigger the dream, the more we need teams to make our dreams come true. You can't have teamwork without leadership, so be a leader!
The seven sides of leadership are: vision, communication skills, people skills, character, competence, boldness, and servanthood, As you focus on all seven dimensions of leadership and build these traits into your life, you will be fully equipped to lead your team to the extreme limits of success.
Key No. 10: Focus–and Finish Strong!
Brick walls are there to stop other people – not you. They are there to stop those who don't want success badly enough. I know you want it. So stay up, stay focused, keep going, finish strong! Even while you work hard to achieve success, be kind to others.
Above all, keep your balance. Don't become so obsessed with your dreams of success that you lose your spouse, your children, your reputation, or your self-respect. To maintain your balance, control your schedule. These are the principles of Extreme Focus. These are the keys to your dreams. To learn more, you can check out What Are The Qualities Of A Good Leader.
